Motorists sometimes have dead batteries, old tires and used motor oil just sitting in their garages or sheds collecting dust and taking up space.
These items don’t belong in their blue bins or at the curb with their trash, according to CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) and Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), two organizations that are offering to take these items off motorists’ hands at no charge and to make sure they are disposed of safely.
During 2011 RecycleDrive, motorists will be able to drop off their drained car, household and marine batteries, used motor oil and old tires (limit four without rims) at one of 15 participating garages. The week-long eco-friendly initiative runs from September 26 – October 1, 2011.
“We encourage all motorists to take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of their dead batteries, old tires and used motor oil in an environmentally friendly way,” said Gina Banwait, community relations specialist, CAA SCO, in a statement. “By recycling these items you will help keep harmful chemicals out of landfills where they can contaminate soil and groundwater.”
“This is the first year that OTS and CAA have partnered to offer Ontarians a convenient way to responsibly recycle their old tires,” added Andrew Horsman, executive director, OTS, in a statement. “The fall is a perfect time to begin thinking about your winter tires and disposing of any that are worn.”
We also had a chance to speak with David Penner the owner of Crow Environmental a vehicle depollution company based in the UK (operating in the USA and Canada). He was impressed with this initiative and says, "It is great to see multiple organizations teaming up to help the environment, programs like this will have a great impact on keeping the planet green".
CAA SCO and OTS will, as a way to thank motorists for doing their part to help preserve the planet, send the first 100 participants at each location home with a free pack of yard waste bags. Meanwhile, CAA SCO members can enter for a chance to win a set of four new winter tires, five free oil changes or a set of recycled rubber car mats.
